Fun Summer Play Ideas for Babies and Children Aged 0–5
Making the Most of the Sunshine
The warm weather this week is a wonderful opportunity for babies and young children to explore, play, and learn. While the sunshine can bring lots of excitement, it’s important to find safe ways to keep little ones cool and comfortable.
Simple sensory activities can provide hours of fun while supporting early development and learning at home.
Play Idea: Splash, Pour and Explore
Water play is a fantastic way for babies and young children to stay cool while developing important skills.
What you’ll need:
- A washing-up bowl, bucket, or shallow tray
- Water
- Plastic cups, spoons, jugs, or containers
- Floating toys, balls, or bath toys
For babies (0–18 months):
Sit with your baby and allow them to splash gently in a shallow tray of water. Talk about what they can see and feel:
- “The water feels cool.”
- “Splash, splash!”
- “Can you see the duck floating?”
This helps develop language, sensory awareness, and early communication skills.
For toddlers and pre-schoolers (18 months–5 years):
Encourage children to pour, fill, empty, and explore.
Ask questions such as:
- Which container holds the most water?
- What happens when we pour slowly or quickly?
- Can you make the toy boat move across the water?
These simple conversations help build vocabulary, early maths concepts, and problem-solving skills.
A Cool Sensory Activity: Frozen Fruit Fun
Freeze slices of orange, lemon, or strawberries in ice cubes and let children explore them in a bowl of water.
Little ones can:
- Watch the ice melt
- Talk about colours and textures
- Smell the fruit
- Practise grasping and transferring objects
Always supervise closely, especially with babies and younger children.
Staying Safe in the Heat
During hot weather, remember to:
☀️ Offer regular drinks of water.
☀️ Keep babies and young children in shaded areas where possible.
☀️ Use appropriate sun protection, including hats and sunscreen.
☀️ Avoid being outdoors during the hottest part of the day.
☀️ Never leave children unattended around water, no matter how shallow.
Every Moment Can Be a Learning Moment
At Foundation Years Trust, we know that learning starts from birth. Through simple, low-cost activities at home, families can support their children’s development, build confidence, and create special memories together.
This week, why not grab a bowl of water, find a shady spot, and enjoy some cool summer learning with your little one?
We’d love to hear how you’re staying cool and learning through play this summer! Share your ideas and photos with us on social media. 🌞💧🦆
