More Than Bedtime: Why Reading Can Happen Anytime, Anywhere

When we think about reading with young children, the image that often comes to mind is a quiet bedtime routine—snuggling under the covers with a picture book and winding down the day together. While this is a lovely tradition, reading doesn’t have to be limited to bedtime. In fact, it can happen anywhere, and it doesn’t even have to involve a book!

Reading can be as simple as pointing out signs, logos, or words on packaging while you’re out and about. Children under five are learning all the time, and everyday moments—walking to the shops, waiting at the bus stop, or even cooking dinner—can be rich with opportunities for home learning. Look at a road sign together and sound out the letters. Spot a cereal box with a colourful logo and talk about what it says. Make up a silly story about where you’re going or who you might meet along the way. These spontaneous moments of connection help children develop language skills, understand the world around them, and build their confidence—all while having fun with you.

The magic of reading and storytelling is not just in the words themselves, but in the connection it builds between you and your child. Whether you’re reading a favourite story for the hundredth time or inventing a new one on the spot, you’re creating a safe, joyful space for learning and bonding.

So next time you’re out and about, look around—learning is everywhere! All it takes is a bit of imagination and your voice. You are your child’s first and most important teacher, and every moment you share helps them grow.
