Hearing is not the same as listening!
For children to communicate with others they also need to learn the important skill of active listening.
This is the way in which the person responds by verbal or non-verbal interactions, and about giving the other person time to talk without interruptions.
By modelling good listening skills with children, they too can become good listeners.
Play ideas –
- Shopping list – Collect items from around your home to sell. Ask your child to listen and remember few things you would like them to buy. Take turns going the shop!
- Bake something together – Encourages listening skills through following instructions.
