Newborn vision can only detect large contrasts between black and white. They are not able to distinguish colour shades yet.
Playing with simple black and white images or toys will encourage your babies visual development.
Babies can become overwhelmed by visual stimulus so keeping you and your environment simple will help.
Think about the clothes you wear, using soft gentle lighting at home, and have a go at making your own black and white play resources.
You could-
- Make black and white sock balls for them to reach and grasp.
- Print out some simple shapes and stick them to the wall, on the floor, or onto a cereal box to explore together
